Felt Like Falling - EP

Felt like Falling is the debut release of Toronto-based saxophonist David Hodgson as a leader. The music of this EP finds much inspiration from traditions of Black American Music and saxophone trios of past generations, as well as folk melodies and indie-pop production techniques.

The three original compositions on this EP highlight some of David’s writing from the past two years inspired by love, recharging, and disaster. The title track was composed following a bike accident that left David with a fractured wrist after he was doored while coming home from a performance. Duke Ellington’s Prelude to a Kiss is featured as it is one of David’s favourite ballads.

Felt like Falling was recorded in David’s parents living room in Vancouver, B.C., in January 2024. It was an impromptu session proposed by Atley King and recorded straight to cassette using his Tascam 488. Recording straight to tape forced the trio to be intentional and carefree with their playing - most tracks are first takes, as that was where the magic transpired. This style of recording enhances at-home qualities which allow the music to be exploratory while sounding comfortable.

The trio also features Daniel Howard on bass and Miles Wong on Drums. These two Vancouver-based musicians, along with David, have played together for several years whenever their paths cross. Even though months go by without these three playing together, their sounds mesh effortlessly whenever they meet. Perhaps the lush sanctuary of North Vancouver guided the sounds we captured.

Felt like Falling appeals to listeners of jazz and creative music as well as those who enjoy new textures and true intentioned music, regardless of its style. This EP was released on April 22, 2024. No tour is planned at the moment.
